Over last few days we went to a Lawyer Conference with Daddy at a very very nice hotel. I love high-end hotels, and they are something I will miss once I move out into the real world. Staying in the fantasy world for now, however, we also went through a tiny town in West Virginia where I discovered my latest Dream Home, a big historic colonial mansion in the mountains right across from a Historic Memorial. I also added a nearby restaurant as one of only two outside-of-NC locations on my internal List of Places With Decent Barbecue.
On the nerddom front, my disappointment that Green Lantern apparently wasn't very good (I will have to rent it once it comes on DVD and decide for myself, as reviews suggest it's not worth enduring a theater for) is somewhat tempered by the happy fact that X-Men First Class caaused a nice fic explosion for one of my favorite pairings.
Speaking of fic: I have a shaping up to be epic that I believe there will be decent interest in. However: I was bitten by the plot bunny for it while reading someone else's drabble. My fic has a different backstory, is in a different 'verse, and for the most part stars different characters, but the general inspiration-type-thing is the same- though it's an AU-setting that others have used as well and that I've worked to have a unique take on. While I know the drabble author's name, I've never interacted with them and am not sure if they're still fandom-active.
What is the etiquette for this situation?
I made an Archive of Our Own account, primarily because I was fed up with FF.net messing up my italics and line breaks and seperations.
Does this mean I'll be writing new stuff? Hopefully. It is summer, after all, and I found several of my old flash drives lying around with half- written stuff on them.
Legitimarly crying right now.
I loved you, DC. I loved you when you were bad and I loved you when you were good and it's been a nice two years with you.
Other people have loved you longer, much longer, and maybe they'll say this is flighty of me.
I don't care.
(Context: DC, apparently stoked by the massive hatred for Marvel's similar act a few years ago, is breaking up Superman and Lois Lane's marriage via cosmic retcon. I've put up with shit, but this amount of disdain piled onto a lot of other shit recently has driven me off, I think. And I'm not overfond of Marvel for a varitey of exciting reasons, so it looks like I'll be picking up the last few bits of Young Avengers and then it's off to indies and the web for me.)
Can anyone rec me a new fandom? Anything?
Shockingly enjoyable, with no panic attacks to report.
Pictures of me can be found here: http://www.facebook.com/#!/media/set/?
I got a job, taking videos for the school, and some of my friends were there, and I think I'm glad I went. Even if my feet hurt.
I'll get to the new dog eventually, but for now, have something interesting I found- some Star Wars fic! It's either unfinished or has a very anticlimactic ending, but my muse for it has left me (it was kind of my other possible beginning for my /other/ "Luke get captured" unfinished fic) but I thought I'd post it anyway, bad writing intact, as a sort of personal motivation to get some of Dark!LeiaEpic up.
( Body of Story )
( Potential End )
( Potential Continuation )
I promise, next up will be an Exciting New Dog Post, or at least a College Post, but I had to get this off of my chest.
.( Cut For OCD Stuff )Also, I never used to hate ships before I got into comics fandom, and I never loathed specific ones (instead of just "I hate all ships that aren't X/Z) until X-Men. I'm not sure what that means. Also, I've never hated a canon ship before X-Men that I can think of. This fascinates and annoys me.
Somebody posted an absolutely fascinating look at "Splinter of the Mind's Eye" and where canon was between ANH and ESB. I liked some of the characterization touches, and must find a way to bring that thing about Luke studying languages up, but am skeptical of others, particuarly Leia not being able to swim. Luke is the one who can't swim, or at least should be.
So, Mr. Winick? You suck. You can't write Ice worth a damn, you're only slightly better at the rest of them, and "thieving Gypsy" is not some new groundbreaking concept in characterization. I'd say go back to writing the Bats, but a) I love them too much and b) Dick Grayson is canonically of Roma heritage and I don't want you near him ever again after this.
You hear me, published author who will never be anywhere near my journal? You hear me?
In happier news, I got to ride again yesterday, and soon we'll be jumping. I love jumping so much, so so much.
Also I rode McGuyver, who is very sweet but noses around my pants for horse treats. Andandand there is a new horse, who is genuinely dappled gray and just flat out GORGEOUS.
I mentioned that I dropped Gen Lost, right? And I'm not really picking up Booster Gold, but that was never a regular thing- I buy issues that have Ted in them. This at times presents a problem, seeing as Ted died years before I started reading comics, but whatever. I'll also buy for Jaime.
If they kill him off I am throwing things.
Anyway, hate Ice's racist new origin, am ambivalent about Ice's boring new costume. I really liked her old one. Want Max Lord to diediedie, preferably after revealing that he was from that alternate universe where everyone good is evil (Earth-3? I think it might be Earth-3).
I plan to start picking up Birds of Prey at the next jumping-on point, and maybe one of the Green Lantern books. Probably Corps.
New X-man writer. On plus side, it isn't the last X-men writer. On the minus side, he seems to ship Rogue and Magneto, a pairing that makes me kind of want to call the cops. Look, Rogue, i understand he's attractive, and I understand the only other availiable option is Gambit, but the man has grandchildren. Three of them. On the plus side, Jean could conceivably be coming back. Always good.
No Children's Crusade until April, though I'm picking up the March tie-in issue, which is almost as good.
I finally get the stint out tomorrow! Yay!
Anyway, I've been having a decent if pain-med-addled week, but I'm finally pretty much off the things! Yay!
(Though I still have a tube-thing inside of me. Not-yay.)
Anyway. I'm getting back into schoolwork, writing, and art. I've got a half-finished pic of Dark!Leia and Han that I'm fairly proud of, and nebulous half-fic to go with it.
Speaking of nebulous half fic, anyone know how to say "you shall not pass" in Romanian? Just wondering.
Life wise, it is rainy and cold. Also Bad Rabbit left... leavings in the hallway. But that's honestly about it for the bad.
I'm doing alright.
.Happy New Year's to all y'all! Hope everybody's doing well. I haven't been feeling great lately, excuse any typoes.
Quesade got kicked upstairs by Marvel to be replaced by Guy I'd Never Heard Of, who has to be better because I can think of supervillains who wouldn't be worse.
TOMORROW IS CHILDREN'S CRUSADE #4 YAAAAAAAAY
(nice try on your part, Marvel, but it'll take until he's completely gone for me to love you)
DC-wise, i'm picking up Birds of Prey.
Star Wars wise, sooner or later brother and I will MAKE mom finish RotJ, which she appearently has not seen.
Movie wise- brother and I shall riff on NIGHT OF THE LEPUS. KILLER BUNNIES. BE THERE.
